What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States primarily for:
  • People aged 65 and older
  • Certain younger people with disabilities
  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant)
Medicare helps with the cost of health care, but does not cover all medical expenses or the cost of most long-term care.

Parts of Medicare
Medicare is divided into four main parts:

Part A – Hospital Insurance
  • Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.
  • Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they paid social security taxes while working.
Part B – Medical Insurance
  • Covers outpatient care, doctor services, preventive services, and some home health care.
  • You pay a monthly premium for Part B.
Part C – Medicare Advantage
  • This plan includes Part A and Part B, plus prescription drugs and additional benefits like vision, hearing, and dental—all in one plan.
Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
  • Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

How does Medicare work?
Most of the time you only need to sign up for Part A and Part B one time. Each year, you can choose which way you get your health coverage (and add or switch drug coverage).

Medicare has different types of coverage. It is tailored based on an individual basis.

There are only 2 steps to set up your Medicare coverage:
  • Sign up for Part A (Hospital Insurance)
  • and Part B (Medical Insurance)

Are you Eligible for Medicare?
You're eligible for Medicare if you're 65 or older, or under 65 with certain disabilities.
You may also qualify at any age if you have End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS.

Most people become eligible three months before their 65th birthday—check your eligibility at Medicare.gov.

How much does Medicare cost?
Depending on the coverage you obtain there are different costs associated with the plan. Generally, you pay a monthly premium for Medicare coverage and part of the costs each time you get a covered service. There’s no yearly limit on what you pay out-of-pocket, unless you have supplemental coverage, like a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy, or you join a Medicare Advantage Plan.

What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides free or low-cost health coverage to eligible low-income individuals and families.

Unlike Medicare, which is primarily age-based, Medicaid is based on income and need.
